It was my privelege to chat with the kind and clever Olivia Jackson, and contribute my perspective and experiences to this collective memoir. Olivia’s book (“Un)Certain: A Collective Memoir of Deconstructing Faith uncovers the courage and vulnerability of over 150 individuals from around the world as they navigate through their unravelling beliefs. Olivia weaves together stories of deeply committed believers who reached a breaking point with the Christian certainties and doctrines they once held dear. Exploring tales of abuse, exclusionary or harsh theologies, and a slow crumbling of conviction as interviewees share their journey towards a carefully considered expansion of faith, the book offers a glimpse into the nuanced and diverse experiences of those who reached the end of the road and dared to keep walking.

One of the things I appreciate most about Olivia’s book is that it feels like sitting in a circle of safety and trust, bearing witness as different people speak the truth of our experiences in faith based organisations.

No one is in charge, no one is insisting they have the answers. We speak simply as people, seeking to integrate what were often very painful, sometimes abusive religious experiences into our current lives.

If you need companionship as you process your own experiences, I recommend this as a resource.

My article “God as Trickster: Finding surprising solace in Unorthodox images of the Divine” was written for the ANSD magazine Coolamon.

This article explores the possibilities of the Trickster archetype as a healing metaphor for people on the edges of a faith tradition.

Exploring fresh language and ways of relating to the Sacred is a potential path for reclaiming a nourishing spirituality for people who have been marginalised and harmed by their faith traditions, for those who want to.

I feel energised by the playful possibilites the Trickster suggests. While Trickster is never an easy companion, I feel they are a fitting companion for the creative, challenging work of crafting a soulful life.
